Standing in front of the tomb of his father HOP LUI, Lord FU CHAI of the State of Ng recalls the bloody war against the State of Yuet – former Lord of Ng HOP LUI mounted an invasion of Yuet but Yuet’s troops had been too tough to defeat. Ng’s Prime Minister NG CHI SHUI advised CHAI to go and borrow some provisions from the State of Chai. Yuet had been under siege for quite some time. Prime Minister FAN LAI enticed three hundred convicts to sacrifice for their country so as to create confusion for Ng’s troops. LAI’s plan worked out well – Ng’s troops were seriously distracted and Lord of Yuet AU TSIN managed to shoot LUI dead with an arrow. LAI manages to break away from the enemies and is finally reunited with TSIN on the mountain. The capital city of Yuet is filled with an atmosphere of tension and hopelessness. As instructed, LAI escorts the Prince into the hideout. TSIN’s little sister TANG KOK refuses to commit suicide, over which she has a terrible quarrel with TSIN. KOK and TSIN finally fall out with each other. The exit of the hideout has been blocked. The Prince and his guard have no choice but to stay in the hideout and feed on the food left over. LAI advises CHUNG to bribe PAK PEI so that TSIN will stand a chance of surviving. PEI, however, does not give a definite yes or no to CHUNG’s request. TSIN is going to kill himself. LAI tries to stop him and the two of them end up picking a fight. CHAI and his troops have...

Yuet is in a state of utter chaos. SZE and TAN manage to escape from their village. TAN has become a lot more sophisticated and decides not to rely on anyone else. SZE misses LAI so terribly that she keeps praying for him. CHAI tries to recruit LAI as his advisor but in vain. To vent his anger, CHAI lets his soldiers bully TSIN in the most horrible manner. KOK who is still alive is found and captured by WONG SUEN LOK in Yuet’s capital city. KOK happens to find the Prince and his guard in the hideout while looking for food. But her reunion with the Prince has also alerted LOK. The guard who is holding the Royal Sword is mistaken for the Prince and is killed instantly. CHUNG learns from KOK that the Prince is still alive. He offers to conduct an agricultural survey so that he can go out and look for solutions. CHUNG runs into SZE in her home village and is surprised to learn about the relationship between her and LAI. CHUNG claims that he is suffering from leprosy, because of which he can get out of Yuet and seek help from other warlords. The troops arrive at Ng and CHAI has fully demonstrated his power and authority. CHAI needs TSIN to kowtow to LUI’s tomb but LAI offers to do the job for TSIN. CHAI is so impressed by LAI’s loyalty. SHUI insists on killing TSIN and LAI, causing CHAI to lose face before a whole roomful of ministers. PEI who is also there tries to mediate between SHUI and CHAI. CHAI rejects SHUI’s idea. CHAI treats TSIN as a horse and orders him to pull the carriage. LAI who cannot bear to whip TSIN chooses to stand aside. As instructed by CHAI, LOK captures CHUNG and takes him to Ng’s capital city. TSIN and LAI are shocked to see CHUNG in CHAI’s Imperial Palace. Knowing that their plan has been thwarted, TSIN and LAI are completely disappointed. As a punishment, CHAI orders CHUNG to guard LUI’s tomb. LAI comes to LUI’s tomb. CHUNG gives LAI a few words of encouragement and reveals to him that the Prince is still alive. To keep TSIN’s confidence up, LAI and CHUNG decide not to tell him the truth. YEE gives TSIN some words of encouragement, for which TSIN is so grateful. CHAI has found SZE but SZE refuses to be his concubine. TAN offers to take SZE’s place, for which the villagers are all very grateful. In fact TAN does not see it as a sacrifice but a way to achieve a higher status. LAI tries his best to convince the Lord of Chor not to declare war on Ng, which affects the morale of the Chor officials. PEI escorts TAN to Ng. Along the way he runs into SZE as well as LAI who is back from the diplomatic mission. On the one hand LAI hates to be separated from SZE, yet on the other he does not want to leave TSIN behind. SZE asks LAI to stay for three more days. LAI who has helped prevent a war has won CHAI’s approval upon his return to Ng. CHAI leaves Prince YAU on his own during the hunt, through which he hopes TSIN’s infidelity will be stirred up, and in which case he will have an excuse to kill TSIN. LAI sees through CHAI and manages to save Prince YAU who has a fall from the horse. In the meantime, CHAI comes along. TSIN comes to realize how horrible and clever CHAI is. SHUI discovers that PEI has accepted some precious gifts from the State of Yuet. He decides to bring the matter to CHAI’s attention. PEI is desperate to save himself from execution. In the nick of time, he reveals to CHAI that SZE is still alive, which spares him from death penalty. Fearing that SZE will make another attempt to kill herself, PEI urges LAI to have a word with her. TSIN feels so guilty towards SZE and LAI. He vows that he will avenge all...

Fearing that SZE will sooner or later take her place, TAN would like to gang up with CHI. CHI, however, dislikes TAN so much that she even tricks the girl into taking an abortion drug. TAN learns from her maid that it is CHI who has killed her baby. Filled with anger, she is resolved to complain to CHAI about CHI. LAI and SZE decide to wed in secret prior to their separation. LAI promises that he will marry SZE as soon as the war is over. Before they are forced to part, the couple make a pact on the bank of Lake Taihu.

The Prince hides himself in SZE’s trousseau box and manages to escape midway through the journey. CHAI learns from the messenger that SZE is on her way from Yuet to Ng. He is overjoyed by the news. SHUI’s son NG FUNG offers to assassinate SZE but is subdued by LAI. The assassination turns out to be a failure. SHUI who tries to kill SZE has a terrible fight with LAI at the entrance of the capital city. Immediately PEI gets into the capital city to look for CHAI. LAI and SHUI are neck and neck in the duel and the matter is not settled until CHAI comes along. SHUI claims that he is taken ill and refuses to see CHAI. PEI then goes to have a talk with CHAI. Thinking that it will be too dangerous for CHAI to lead the war, SHUI goes to stop his master at once. This is in fact a plan by PEI –...

CHUNG cannot bear to see KOK suffer. For KOK’s sake, he tries to bribe LOK to let the former princess marry her fiance, who is the prince of the State of Cheng. To their great disappointment, Lord of Cheng is so afraid of CHAI that he insists on breaking off the engagement. On their way back home, KOK and CHUNG pass Ying Ha Valley, where they run into the Prince who has now become YUET NUI’s apprentice. YUET NUI and LAI were taught by the same kung fu teacher. CHUNG asks YUET NUI to break the news to LAI that the State of Choi is planning on raising a rebellion against Ng and that the prince of Choi is stuck in Cheng. CHAI shows his loving concern for SZE, which irks CHI beyond measure. Lord of Chai would like to give CHAI a lesson on behalf of his daughter CHI. He points out during the...

The war breaks out and Prince YAU is being besieged. CHAI has no idea whether he should sign a peace treaty or go on with the war. Being so doubtful as to what to do, CHAI turns to LAI for advice. LAI points out that Lord of Chai is only trying to show his power and has no intention of causing bloodshed. CHAI puts the blame on CHI as he believes that it is she who has stirred up the political discord between him and Lord of Chai. CHI comes to vent her anger on SZE but CHAI arrives in time to stop her. He says that CHI’s jealousy is not forgivable for it has triggered a bitter political row and even put Prince YAU in danger. SZE tries to intercede for CHI and CHI is finally spared punishment. SZE has made two little brocade bags, one for LAI and one for herself. CHAI grabs SZE’s brocade...

CHAI and LAI are on their way to save Prince YAU, during which a landslide suddenly occurs. They are soon swept down to the bottom of the valley by the torrent of mud and earth. CHAI is shocked when he catches sight of LAI’s brocade bag. He suspects that LAI and SZE have been having an affair behind his back. LAI manages to save CHAI when another landslide strikes. CHAI forces himself to put his suspicion aside and tries to focus on the war against Cheng and the rescue of Prince YAU. The dispute is over and CHAI begins to enquire about the relationship between LAI and SZE. LAI claims that everyone from Yuet has a brocade bag. CHAI points out that LAI will face immediate execution if TSIN fails to present his own brocade bag. Knowing that her brocade bags have caused so much trouble, SZE...

LAI is held in high regard for his efforts in rescuing Prince YAU. As a reward for his hard work, he is put to work on the horse ranch, where he runs into SZE and CHAI who have come to choose a horse. While CHAI is busy looking for a suitable horse, LAI tries to console SZE and once again recognizes her contribution to their home country. People of Yuet have been facing starvation and have had a string of furious rows over food. To ease the problem, CHUNG offers to escort the food delivery team to Ng so that he can seize this chance to lodge a complaint to CHAI. Prince YAU draws with FUNG in a simulated war game, which gives CHAI a great thrill. After his return to Ng, CHAI is so happy that he asks the whole family to go on a hunt. SZE refuses to get into the carriage pulled by TSIN. CHAI gets irked and needs SZE to whip TSIN. CHAI decides to have an animal-hunt competition with Prince YAU. At night, LOK and KOK enjoy the wine submitted by CHUNG in the bedroom. The pair collapse in a drunken stupor soon afterwards. PEI treats the soldiers, including most of those who guard the food store, to a slap-up meal. YUET NUI, along with the Prince, manages to steal away the food in the middle of the night. Being made a scapegoat for the fire at the food store, LOK is sent back to Ng for a full inquiry. SHUI does not want PEI to be the Governor of Yuet and offers to fill the role himself. LAI tries to sow discord between CHAI and Prince YAU. SZE has hidden a hare inside her room. She asks Prince YAU to help feed the hare, during which CHAI comes along and is shocked to see Prince YAU holding a bowl of animal feed. SHUI and PEI are of the same opinion that Prince YAU is the best person for the post of Governor of Yuet, to which CHAI does not raise any objection. LAI and TSIN have a discussion on military tactics based on historical facts. LAI asks TSIN how to react in a particular scenario and he tries to bolster TSIN’s confidence by letting him win the debate. CHAI who has overheard their conversation thinks so highly of LAI. To make LAI join his government, CHAI decides to kill TSIN. CHAI meets TSU TAT in secret in order to plot the murder of TSIN. Lord of Chai releases TSIN and returns the jade pendant. Prince YAU encounters KOK in Yuet. He sympathizes with the ex-princess and promises to get her a maid. Lord of Tsun invites CHAI to a hunting trip. CHAI describes it as an event that should not be missed. He points out that the princess of Tsun is still single and appears to be a perfect match for Prince YAU. CHAI orders an investigation into the matter. TAN is afraid that the truth will out sooner or later and thus asks SZE to take the blame for her. Fearing that LAI, who passed the medicinal herb to TAN, will get caught in trouble as well, SZE is going to tell a lie. She explains to CHAI that she had put the medicinal herb somewhere, which was later grabbed by the maids and mixed into the tea prepared for CHI. SZE asks CHAI to forgive all the parties concerned and CHAI agrees to her request. CHI is going to ask SZE for an explanation but before she does so, she happens to discover that SZE has had a higher status than her. CHAI and Lord of Tsun would like to arrange a marriage between their children. Now that Tsun has become a close ally of Ng, CHAI is more and more ambitious to take over Central China. Lord of Chai wants to bring CHI back to Chai for better treatment but is rejected by CHAI. LAI points out that it is not a good idea for TSIN to be superstitious. He asks TSIN to pull down the royal temple and pass the sacred wood to CHAI, about which TSIN has deep reservations. LAI means to let CHAI know about the sacred wood in the process of constructing Wan Wah Palace. To protect his country from the curse, CHAI lets TSIN demolish Yuet’s royal temple and bring the scared wood back to Ng. TAN asks SZE to let her stay with CHAI so that she will have a greater chance of getting pregnant. CHAI flirts with SZE in front of LAI at Wan Wah Palace. LAI is in great pain and means to drink himself into oblivion in the rain. SZE comes to look after LAI who is as drunk as a skunk. The next morning, LAI wakes up and finds SZE’s hairpin on the floor. TSIN no longer needs to kowtow to LUI upon his return to Ng. YUET NUI has accidentally injured FUNG in the woods. She offers to dress his wound and lets him go afterwards. SZE and CHAI go out for a walk, during which an assassin, who is believed to be a citizen of Yuet, appears suddenly. SZE is taken hostage but LAI manages to save her. LAI is seriously hurt while SZE has suffered slight injuries. To suppress his feelings for SZE, LAI asks to stay in Yuet for recuperation until he makes a full recovery. CHAI agrees to his request. LAI comes to Ying Ha Valley to find YUET NUI. FUNG tries to locate the whereabouts of LAI as instructed by SHUI. FUNG finds out that LAI is staying at Ying Ha Valley. LAI asks YUET NUI about FUNG and she replies that FUNG does not look like a villain. FUNG goes...

TSIN and YEE have prepared a meal for LAI on his big day while CHAI is involved in organizing every detail of the wedding. LAI and SZE look at each other in agony during the banquet. To show his generosity, CHAI agrees to LAI’s request and puts TSIN and YEE in the back seats in the wedding banquet. LAI asks the princess to go to bed first. YEE would like to give him an explanation but TSIN stops her and carries her into the hut to take a rest. TSIN is angry with CHAI for insulting YEE. CHAI asks SHUI to conduct an investigation and track down the real culprit. LAI decides to burn YUET NUI’s body to ashes. LAI apologizes to SZE for shouting at her. He tells her that he finds it so frustrating that it seems to take so long to win the trust of CHAI. In a desperate attempt to save TAN’s life, SZE promises to keep the secret. TSIN pretends that he has gone insane and that his life is a complete mess without LAI by his side. SZE points out to CHAI that LAI has turned against TSIN and chosen to serve his greatest foe, and that it is LAI’s guilty conscience and the malicious gossip that make him unhappy. He tells CHAI that there is much gossip about him saying that he has been too harsh to TSIN and TSIN’s people and that he has tried every possible means to make LAI join his government. He points out that Tsun’s reputation and status will surely be affected after the marriage between Princess of Tsun and Prince YAU if CHAI carries on with what he has been doing. CHAI has hired a wet nurse to look after the little prince. The wet nurse is in fact the mother of the baby and is lucky to survive after the assault. The truth is finally brought to light, which causes CHAI to lose face in front of various warlords. CHAI gets so furious that he decides to kill TAN, the baby and the wet nurse in secret. Fearing that CHAI will pass away soon, Prince YAU finally promises to go back to Ng. KOK suggests Prince YAU marry Princess of Tsun for CHAI’s sake. Prince YAU is deeply touched by her thoughtfulness. LAI and SZE agree that LAI will have a taste of the toxic herb before TSIN does so. TSIN decides to put his life into the hands of LAI and takes a bite of the toxic herb without a second thought. SHUI points out to CHAI that Princess of Tsun is lame and that it would be a bit unfair for Prince YAU to be forced to marry a lame girl. CHAI has announced that whoever promises to take in Prince YAU will be deemed to be his enemy. CHUNG expresses his love for KOK. Prince YAU is misled into believing that KOK has been in love with CHUNG and that she goes out with him only because of his status. Feeling so frustrated, Prince YAU walks off in silence. KOK tries to catch up with Prince YAU but in vain – he is already on his way to Chai. In order to keep the promise he made to Lord of Tsun, CHAI needs Prince YAU to come back to hold the wedding ceremony no matter what. SZE brings CHAI to the newly built Heung Sit Corridor, whose construction is completed earlier by her order. Looking at the beautiful corridor, CHAI bursts out laughing.

LAI advises CHAI to pretend to have declared war on Chai. It is anticipated that Prince YAU, who is eager to protect his grandfather, will soon come back to mediate. TSIN behaves as if he is no longer concerned about his country, but in reality he has got a plan in mind. He meets his countrymen in secret and encourages them to keep up the struggle until he reclaims the throne. TSIN leads a frugal life in Yuet so as to remind himself of all his humiliations while serving under CHAI. He learns from LUK YING that FUNG has been spying on him. To make CHAI less vigilant towards him, TSIN leaves the affairs of state to CHUNG and pretends that he is fooling around day in and day out. The rulers of Chan, Sung and Cheng who owe LAI a debt of gratitude agree to offer help without hesitation....

He gets changed into his expensive clothes at once so that he can pose himself as a typical fatuous ruler. KOK is shocked to hear that Prince YAU is marrying. Accompanied by CHUNG, KOK heads for Ng to see Prince YAU. She is going to express her love for Prince YAU but by the time she arrives at Ng, it is already too late. Princess of Tsun gets insulted at the wedding banquet. To vent her anger, she means to speak ill of KOK before Prince YAU. Prince YAU gets so furious and kills the princess accidentally. Ng’s troops have finally got into the city. On the surface Lord of Tsun has come to congratulate CHAI on his victory, but in reality he is trying to intercede for Lord of Chai. He points out that CHAI will benefit more if Lord of Chai agrees to pay reparations and cede land to Ng. CHAI and LAI set off to the battlefield together and return in triumph following the end of the war. Princess of Chan has overheard the conversation between SZE and PEI, from which she learns that they are going to betray Ng. She begs SZE to give up on the idea of plotting a rebellion.
