Natasha Tontey's expansive new work, Primate Visions: Macaque Macabre, explores a reversal of the power relationships between living creatures, monkeys and humans, as seen from the perspective of Minahasan culture. The black-crested macaque, known as Yaki in Minahasan, is simultaneously viewed as part of the social structure of everyday life by the indigenous community and as vermin, known for invading villages and stealing crops. This relationship is further complicated by the recognition of the Yaki as an endangered species, prompting international organisations to encourage their preservation.

Primate Cinema: Apes as Family is the premiere of a drama made expressly for chimps to an actual chimpanzee audience. Like people, chimps are fascinated by television. But until Apes as Family, no filmmaker had made a film to appeal to two ape species. This film contains all the primate dramas-around sex, food, territory, and politics. The movie follows an urban chimp into her home and what happens when she meets a bunch of wild strangers. The chimpanzees watching on televisions installed at the Edinburgh Zoo were a curious, and at times, rowdy bunch.

This film is composed of a series of very short shots. The two principal motifs are human and vegetal, with a few animals briefly glimpsed in passing. The primates of the title (for once, this film has a title, and an insistent one at that) are the men, women and children who visit the museum. A man, a woman, a family with children detach themselves from their surroundings; their images are reworked, re-framed and edited so that they become intermingled with a series of luminous wide shots of vegetation. In this air-conditioned location, the film-maker has managed to give a certain luxuriance to the surrounding nature; the human visitors, in turn, reclaim something of their cosmic dimension from dubious civilization.

Primates Like Us

In the summer of 1998 a group of primarily American undergraduate students from Central Washington University went to Bali as part of the university’s first Balinese Macaque Project field school. The goal was to experience Balinese culture and study macaque monkey behavior and document the entire six-week process with on-location video footage. After compiling and reviewing more than 50 hours of video footage, however, it became clear that what was actually captured was an ethnographic account of a group of undergraduate anthropology majors who were experiencing simultaneously a new culture, the rigors of anthropological fieldwork, and the conflicts of living and working with each other as a team.

A shipping disaster in the 19th Century has stranded a man and woman in the wilds of Africa. The lady is pregnant, and gives birth to a son in their tree house. Soon after, a family of apes stumble across the house and in the ensuing panic, both parents are killed. A female ape takes the tiny boy as a replacement for her own dead infant, and raises him as her son. Twenty years later, Captain Phillippe D'Arnot discovers the man who thinks he is an ape. Evidence in the tree house leads him to believe that he is the direct descendant of the Earl of Greystoke, and thus takes it upon himself to return the man to civilization.
